The Jacksonville Jaguars emerge from their bye week losers of two straight games.
Now, they face additional challenges with the news that their star two-way player and former No. 2 overall pick in the draft, Travis Hunter, will miss the next four games. According to head coach Liam Coen, Hunter injured his knee during Thursday’s practice but is reported to be in “good spirits.”
"We're currently assessing the injury just to determine the best course of action moving forward for Travis and the team," Coen said to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "You just feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team, for everything," Coen said. "But he's in good spirits right now. Minor setback for a major comeback. That's just the way it's gotta be."
Sitting at 4-3 and second in the AFC South behind the Indianapolis Colts (7-1), the Jaguars are now further behind than they have been all season. On the bubble to make the playoffs with a 45% chance, they have the advantage of facing the 2-5 Las Vegas Raiders, who are coming off a 31-0 shutout of the Kansas City Chiefs, in Week 9.
Hunter has been a key part of the Jaguars' system this season, with 298 receiving yards, one touchdown, 11 solo tackles, 15 total tackles and three passes defended, but no interceptions.
Listed as the Jaguars' WR2 behind Brian Thomas Jr., who is their WR1, but with one of their top cornerbacks out, others will need to step up in these next four games to give QB Trevor Lawrence an additional receiver option. Dyami Brown could be relied on to receive more targets in Hunter's absence, having gained 194 yards on 16 catches and scoring one touchdown.
On defense, cornerbacks Montaric Brown and Christian Braswell could get more snaps against the Raiders and be effective, as they’re part of the 28th-ranked pass defense (182.7 yards). Given the length of Hunter's injury, the Jaguars might make a move before Tuesday’s trade deadline to add depth at both receiver and cornerback, if those on the roster aren’t sufficient.
