Victor Wembanyama doesn't care about being dunked on — and it's refreshing

Victor Wembanyama abides by the "no risk, no reward" philosophy. The San Antonio Spurs phenom has blocked 454 shots since entering the NBA in 2023-24 — the most in the league by a country mile.

Wembanyama has been routinely posterized along the way. Last week, Zion Williamson dunked not once but twice over the 7-foot-5 Frenchman, yet Wembanyama got him back by blocking him thrice within a minute.

In Thursday's game against the Miami Heat, Wembanyama was once again on the opposing end of a poster dunk from Bam Adebayo. Wembanyama had the last laugh as he thwarted a 10-foot hook shot from Adebayo in the waning moments of the Spurs' 107-101 victory.

Victor Wembanyama not averse to risks

After the game, Wembanyama made it clear that he has no problem being in the firing line, as he's trying to contest or block every shot at the rim.

"Getting dunked on is part of the game," Wembanyama told reporters on the risks of trying to block every shot. "Until [the day] I'm getting dunked on more than I'm blocking shots, I'm going to keep going. But none of us will live to [see] that day."

Wemby's comments indicate that he's willing to accept humiliation as long as he puts in maximum effort and helps his team win.

Refreshing attitude for a superstar

Typically, NBA players, especially the marquee ones, hate being dunked on, and often move out of the way when a player charges to the rim. Wembanyama, though, is obviously not wired that way.

The 21-year-old finished with another five blocks on Thursday as the Spurs improved to 5-0, marking their best start in franchise history. Through five games, he has amassed 151 points, 73 rebounds and 24 blocks, making him the first player since Bob McAdoo in 1975 to reach those numbers. Furthermore, he's the first player ever to average 30 points per game in a 5-0 start since Wilt Chamberlain in 1960.

The Spurs (5-0) will look to keep their winning streak alive against the Phoenix Suns (1-4) in an away game on Sunday.
