NASCAR Cup Series championship contender Chase Briscoe suffers scare in practice at Phoenix

NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 contender Chase Briscoe suffered his biggest scare of the season in Friday's NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Phoenix Raceway.

Less than five minutes into the only practice session of the weekend for Sunday's Cup Series season finale, Briscoe suffered a flat left-rear tire on the frontstretch of the one-mile oval, bringing out the yellow flag.

Fortunately for Briscoe, his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota sustained very minimal damage.

Briscoe was able to quickly slow his car, and as the tire failure occurred on the straightaway, he did not come close to hitting the outside wall.

Tire failures could become worrying throughout race weekend

AJ Allmendinger also suffered a flat tire early in practice, which could be the beginning of a worrying trend for drivers and teams throughout the weekend — especially the four competing for the Cup Series championship.

Shortly after Briscoe and Allmendinger had flat tires, another JGR Toyota in Christopher Bell also had a left-rear tire go flat, as did Daniel Suarez.

At the time of the incident, Briscoe was 18th on the speed chart, with William Byron (fourth) the fastest of the Championship 4. Austin Cindric was fastest in the session at the time of caution.

Unfortunately for Briscoe and the No. 19 team, the rest of the field and his three playoff competitors will have a massive advantage in regard to practice time as Briscoe's team repairs his car and makes sure everything is in order.
