Trevor Zegras is fitting in quite nicely in Philadelphia

Trevor Zegras was a polarizing player with the Anaheim Ducks. Some saw an uber-talented highlight machine, others saw a one-dimensional disappointment. With the Philadelphia Flyers, however, Zegras has taken advantage of his new situation to play maybe the best hockey of his career.

After five up-and-down, injury-marred seasons in Anaheim, Philadelphia took a flyer (pun intended) on Zegras when they traded Ryan Poehling and two draft picks for him this past offseason. The 2019 ninth-overall pick has rewarded the Flyers with high-end play, as his 12 points leads the team in scoring. At still only 24-years old, Zegras aligns nicely with Philadelphia’s other talented young forwards such as Matvei Michkov, Owen Tippett, and Tyson Foerster.

On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by three-time Stanley Cup champion and the Flyers’ special advisor to hockey operations Patrick Sharp to discuss Zegras’ fit in Philadelphia.

Hutton: “You look at the Flyers, right, and there’s some young like Zegras and Michkov that have come over. Where can you help them off the rink? Obviously, your accolades, you’ve been part of so many championships. And the Flyers, in a market that demands someone to win, is this an important factor to get to these younger guys quicker?”

Sharp: “Yeah, sure. I’m another voice for the coaching staff. Every coach on our development staff is as well. You mentioned some names of some younger players that we have, with Zegras kind of leading the charge off a huge game last night, three-effort for him. I think that’s kind of an underrated move that Danny (Briere) and his staff made this offseason was bringing in Trevor Zegras into Philly. Giving him a real good opportunity to become the player that a lot of people thought he could be when we watched him torch Canada there with the World Junior team for Team U.S.A. He’s off to a pretty good start to his career with the Flyers. He’s been great, terrific in a lot of different areas.

He’s been fun to watch. I know I played with Patrick Kane, who’s got some great hands, and definitely deserves that reputation, but to watch Zegras in practice and even the games, skate with his head up, control the puck, distribute to his teammates, his skills that he has, like the trick-show stuff that he puts on is like Swaggy-P level. You know, it’s next level stuff.”
