Packers need more consistency from QB Jordan Love to remain in Super Bowl hunt

On Sunday, Jordan Love turned 27, which has been the lucky number for Green Bay Packers quarterbacks.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, former Green Bay QBs Aaron Rodgers (2010 season), Brett Favre (1996 season) and Bart Starr (1961 season) won their first championships during their age-27 seasons. (Starr won his first title before the start of the Super Bowl era.) However, questions remain about whether Love is following in the footsteps of his predecessors, especially after he struggled Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Jordan Love turned in one of his more disappointing performances against the Panthers

In Green Bay's home game against Carolina, Love completed 26-of-37 passes for 273 yards and one interception. He also posted a season-low 80.1 passer rating, below the league average.

Love's performance left Green Bay — which averaged just 5.9 yards per play — unable to generate much offense. Surprisingly, the team didn't score any points in the first quarter. This allowed Carolina to pull off a 16-13 upset. The Packers are now 5-2-1, while the Panthers are 5-4.

In a postgame news conference, Love admitted the Packers offense has been "inconsistent" this season. Some of that falls on the QB, who has a Jekyll-Hyde quality to his game.

Some weeks, Love plays at an MVP level. In a 35-25 Week 8 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2020 first-round pick outdueled Rodgers, completing 29-of-37 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns.

Other weeks, he plays nowhere near that level and makes head-scratching plays. See a failed fourth-down-conversion attempt early in the fourth quarter against Carolina, where he scrambled frantically before throwing the ball to Panthers cornerback Mike Jackson in the end zone. The play would've been an interception had the DB not dropped the ball.

To Love's credit, he has reduced interception-worthy throws this season. Thus far, he has thrown just three interceptions after tossing 11 last season.

But Love, who's entering his third season as a starter for the Packers, should no longer be experiencing some of the lapses he did on Sunday. He must get them out of his system over the course of the season. If Love doesn't, he could miss out on what has been a special year for past Packers QBs.
