Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman bolstered his team's pass rush by acquiring Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins on Monday.
Some Philadelphia fans may have been disappointed by that move, as stories previously linked the Eagles with Cleveland Browns All-Pro pass-rusher Myles Garrett.
According to Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal, Roseman admitted after the trade deadline expired on Tuesday that he considered taking a "big swing" at completing a blockbuster deal. Roseman was also careful to avoid directly naming players who are currently associated with other teams while discussing what could have been for the Eagles.
"When there are opportunities to be aggressive for the right players, we're not going to sit on our hands. I don't think you have great success without taking great risks at times," Roseman explained.
The Eagles were first mentioned as a potential landing spot for Garrett shortly after he requested a trade this past February. However, he eventually signed a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed to remain with Cleveland. He has since repeatedly expressed his frustration over the state of the 2-6 Browns this fall, but Cleveland reportedly told teams there was "zero chance" he'd be traded before the evening of Nov. 4 arrived.
Along with acquiring Phillips, the Eagles grabbed lottery-ticket cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Michael Carter II. On Tuesday, the New York Jets shockingly traded star cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two first-round draft choices and wide receiver Adonai "AD" Mitchell. There's no indication Roseman came close to paying such a price for Gardner's services.
"We can't be afraid to fail," Roseman added about not making a headline-grabbing trade on Tuesday. "...If there was an opportunity to do that, that we thought also gave us the opportunity to be the last team standing and put confetti on our head, we're going to go aggressive in that direction."
Some Eagles supporters may wish Roseman had been more aggressive, even though the reigning Super Bowl champions seem to have the goods to make a repeat run this season. Perhaps Roseman will take a true "big swing" at trading for Garrett this coming winter if the Eagles aren't the last team standing when Super Bowl LX comes to an end.
