Booger McFarland takes massive shot at former LSU HC Brian Kelly

The LSU Tigers are looking to the future. They fired Brian Kelly before their bye week after a demoralizing 49-25 home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies.

Soon thereafter, athletic director Scott Woodward was fired after he was basically taken behind the shed and verbally berated by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. They're now moving forward with interim head coach Frank Wilson and new athletic director Verge Ausberry.

In the meantime, though, a former LSU football star turned popular football "talking head", Booger McFarland, wanted to take one parting shot at Kelly before the Tigers move on this weekend to a big game against No. 4 Alabama.

“Brian Kelly didn’t work hard enough in Baton Rouge,” McFarland said on ESPN, per On3. “I think right now, all the stories are starting to come out. There’s a thing called being a good fit, and I think as we look back on it, Brian Kelly wasn’t a good fit. I think for all the reasons that we talked about — him being from Boston and coming down to the south. It just wasn’t a good fit."

From Winnsboro, Louisiana, McFarland played at LSU and was an All-American defensive lineman in 1998.

Brian Kelly was always a questionable fit with LSU

The "fit" conversation is absolutely one that was had throughout Kelly's tenure in Baton Rouge. Yes, he became a very famous head coach by going 113-40 in 12 seasons at Notre Dame before he came to LSU, so he was seen as a big-time hire at the time. With that said, his first interaction with LSU's fanbase saw him faking what he must have thought was the Louisiana accent.

Fit was always an open question, as was Kelly's ability to win the big game. He was fired by LSU despite a 34-14 overall record, but he never could get his team to the College Football Playoff, even when it was expanded to 12 teams.

“I don’t even know if he knew what gumbo was. Like, if I’ve got to explain to you what gumbo is, you probably don’t need to be in the south," McFarland said.

The whole "he didn't work hard enough" bit is hard to prove, and it sounds a lot like a personal grudge, but it's easy to get the sense that Kelly didn't make a ton of friends while the head coach at LSU.

"Genuinely one of the worst humans I've been around, ever," said former LSU safety Matthew Langlois after the news of Kelly's firing.

These are some harsh criticisms, and they may or may not be deserved. Either way, folks associated with LSU seem to be happy to move on from the Kelly era.
