Raiders' Pete Carroll sounds off on offensive woes after third straight loss

The Las Vegas Raiders are sitting on a 2-7 record after dropping their third consecutive game.

Despite holding the Denver Broncos to just 10 points, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly's unit couldn't get much going, logging 188 total yards en route to a 10-7 loss.

That performance may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for head coach Pete Carroll. Once again, he took a jab at the team's inability to establish the run.

Pete Carroll calls out the offense again

“We’re not scoring enough points,” Carroll said, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. “That’s about as obvious as you can get. We’ve got to run the ball better. Chip was trying. He was staying with the running game to try to not let them tee off on us. We’ve got to score more.”

Jeanty toted the ball 19 times for 60 yards, and the Raiders logged just 74 rushing yards in the loss. That has been a recurring issue for a team that used the No. 6 pick on Jeanty to revamp the running game. Through nine games, they rank 30th in total yards per game (272.7) and points (15.4). They're 29th in rushing yards per game at 87.4.

Ashton Jeanty hasn't looked good as a rookie

While run-blocking and quarterback Geno Smith's inefficiencies have also taken a toll on their ability to run the ball, the rookie out of Boise State hasn't been as good as advertised, either.

Per Pro Football Reference, Jeanty has turned 143 carries into 547 rushing yards (3.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. He also has 23 receptions for 136 yards and three scores.

It's never wise to give up on a player after 10 games, but Jeanty entered the league with some questions because of the lack of elite competition he faced in college. He's clearly a very talented player, and the Raiders' woes run deeper than one player. But so far, he has failed to justify such a high draft selection.

As for his team, it might be better off just planning for the NFL Draft and next season.
