The top of the Big 12 standings might look crowded, but after a dominant home win over previously undefeated BYU, Texas Tech sits alone.
College Football Playoff No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders (9-1, 6-1 in Big 12) handled No. 7 BYU Cougars (8-1, 5-1 in Big 12) easily, 29-7, in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated. The Red Raiders out-gained the Cougars, 368-255, including 149-67 on the ground. BYU punted on six of its first eight possessions and only had one drive reach the red zone, compared to seven for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders are one of three teams in the Big 12 with one conference loss, but they're unquestionably the best team in the conference. Each of Texas Tech's nine wins have come by at least 22 points. Its only loss was by four, 26-22, at defending Big 12 champions Arizona State (6-3, 4-2 in Big 12), which is without star quarterback Sam Leavitt for the rest of the season.
Texas Tech has been among the most dominant teams in the country all season. Its ceiling is higher than any other Big 12 team, and with a strong regular-season finish, it might be able to withstand a conference title game defeat by still making the CFP. The Red Raiders host UCF (4-5, 1-5 in Big 12) next Saturday before traveling to West Virginia (4-6, 2-5 in Big 12) in their regular-season finale following a Week 13 bye.
Based on Saturday's blowout victory, Texas Tech should walk into the Big 12 title game at 11-1. The Red Raiders are in a class of their own within the conference, and it might take the playoff for them to find an opponent in their weight class.
