Makhi Boone is a three-star cornerback from Lakewood, Ohio, which is right outside of Cleveland.
Boone had been committed to the Miami (OH) Redhawks for some time, and it made sense. Oxford, Ohio, is just a few hours drive southwest of Cleveland, and the Redhawks gave Boone the chance to play football in-state while still competing at a relatively high level. MAC football is no joke, and the Redhawks are currently one of the top teams in the conference at 5-4 (4-1 conference).
It all seemed like a good match, and Boone had been committed to Miami (OH) since May, but then, Rich Rodriguez and the West Virginia Mountaineers came calling early in November.
The Mountaineers offered Boone on Nov. 6; he took an official visit to Morgantown this past weekend, and on Sunday evening, he flipped his commitment from the Redhawks to the Mountaineers.
“I’ve always wanted to play competitive football and be coached by the best,” Boone told Greg Smith of Rivals regarding his decision. “WVU offers the opportunity to do that. The culture and fans at WVU show how much they love the game and that’s the kind of environment I want to be part of.”

There were football reasons that Boone decided to flip to the Mountaineers, and the official visit definitely played a role in his decision. With that said, he likes what WVU offers him off the field as well.
“I loved hearing how the program focuses on developing players beyond football,” Boone said. “They have academic support and career development resources that stood out to me.”
According to the 247Sports Composite, Boone is ranked in a tie as the No. 119 cornerback in the 2026 class. He'll go down as Rodriguez's 28th 2026 commitment in a class that's ranked No. 45 nationally.
