Shortly after reporters confirmed on Monday that the New York Giants had relieved head coach Brian Daboll of his duties, some wondered whether or not general manager Joe Schoen could also be dismissed either during or after the season.
It sounds like Schoen may be safe through at least the start of the 2026 campaign.
In the official team statement that announced the firing of Daboll, Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch revealed that Schoen "remains in his position as general manager and will lead the search for a new head coach." For now, offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka will serve as the Giants' interim head coach.
"We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development," Mara said about holding onto Schoen. "Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect."
Mara's decision wasn't entirely shocking, as a recent report shared that Daboll and Schoen were not necessarily a package deal even though both men accepted their jobs with the Giants in January 2022. The franchise reached the playoffs and claimed a road postseason victory in its first campaign under Daboll and Schoen, but the Giants have since gone 11-33.
Offensive lineman Evan Neal, cornerback Deonte Banks, center John Michael Schmitz and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt are among some of Schoen's notable draft misses during his Giants tenure. As SNY's Connor Hughes mentioned, Daboll "was one of the loudest voices pushing" for the Giants to grab quarterback Jaxson Dart ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Dart thus far has been the most impressive signal-caller of his class this fall.
"The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise," Mara and Tisch added. "We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product."
One wonders what will happen regarding Schoen's employment if the Giants fail to produce an improved product through Week 18. 2-8 Big Blue will next host the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 16.
5-2-1 Green Bay faces the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) at Lambeau Field on Monday night.
