Even after how things ended with the New England Patriots, few people would disagree that Bill Belichick is either the greatest or one of the three greatest head coaches in NFL history.
However, given his age, military-like discipline and determination to micromanage every detail, the league may have moved on from him. He surprisingly failed to get a head-coaching position after being let go by the Patriots, with team owner Robert Kraft specifically warning the Atlanta Falcons about him.
Now, with Brian Daboll no longer with the Giants, he's once again a candidate to return to the pros. However, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, there's one caveat.
In his latest column, Florio argued that the Giants could be interested in a reunion with Belichick, but only Belichick. That means his not-so-popular sidekick, Michael Lombardi, and his overly controlling significant other, Jordon Hudson, won't be a part of the deal.
"The challenge becomes getting G.M. Joe Schoen (who’s running the search) on board with the possibility of a Big Blue Belichick reunion," Florio wrote. "If guardrails can be put in place to keep Belichick from throwing his weight around (and from bringing his consigliere and his creative muse along with him), maybe it could work."
Lombardi has a long history of burning bridges in the NFL, and there have also been several reports about Hudson's demeanor, treatment of employees and grasp of the Belichick empire. The UNC Tar Heels are 4-5, so it's not like Belichick or his brass have done much to convince people that he's still got it.
That being said, if someone deserves another chance in the NFL, it's Belichick. Whether he'll be willing to put his entourage aside to keep adding records to his NFL resume remains to be seen.
