The New York Jets had opportunities to potentially win Thursday's game against the New England Patriots, but head coach Aaron Glenn said the team's lack of discipline was the death knell for his squad.
The Jets took a 7-0 lead against their division rival on Thursday evening after an impressive opening drive, but 21 consecutive points from the Pats swung the pendulum in New England's favor. In the fourth quarter, there were simply too many mistakes for the Jets to overcome.
"The one thing that really just sticks out is details and discipline," Glenn said in his postgame news conference. "That was a box that we didn't check off today. We have to look at those things, coaches and players alike, and do a better job there."
With New England leading 14-7 at halftime and getting the ball to start the second half, New York's defense stood up and made an impressive stop. But quarterback Justin Fields and the Jets couldn't move the ball on the ensuing possession, which enabled New England to score and take a 21-7 lead.
While New York answered with a touchdown of its own, that was the final time the Jets had an answer.
With 7:34 to go in the game, the Jets trailed 24-14 but had possession of the football deep in their own territory. With an opportunity to score and get back in the game in front of them, Fields fumbled, giving the ball back to the Patriots, who kicked a field goal and got one more stop to ice the contest.
The Jets had seven penalties to New England's two in the loss.
"Just across the board, I have very high standards for our team in general," Glenn said. "I will never go away from those standards. When I say details and discipline, I'm not just talking about players. I'm talking about coaches too. We have to make sure we're on the same page."
The Jets will have a couple of extra days of preparation before traveling to Baltimore to take on the Ravens on Nov. 23.
