Shortly after the New York Jets fell to 2-8 on the season via a 27-14 loss at the New England Patriots (9-2) on Thursday night, former Jets player and current analyst Willie Colon directly said that New York's Justin Fields "is not an NFL quarterback."
During the Amazon Prime Video postgame show, Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez also wondered why first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn didn't turn to backup Tyrod Taylor during Thursday's contest.
"It’s been this way for the last month," Gonzalez said about Fields' play, per Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "And so as you’re looking forward ... you’re tearing down the house and starting from scratch. Does that also say, OK, are you trying to move up and get a better draft choice? And I would never want to say a team is intentionally going out there and losing and trying to tank it. But you’re also saying, 'This is just what we’ve got and we’ll just let it play. And hopefully he plays well, and if he doesn’t, oh, well. It doesn’t matter, it’s like – we win no matter what. Even with losing, we’re still going to win because it’s going to help our draft choice.'"
Gonzalez was referencing how the Jets acquired future draft assets for star cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline. While the Jets later managed to earn a 27-20 win over the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 9, Fields completed just 6-of-11 pass attempts for 54 yards (42 of which were picked up on a short pass) in that outing.
Fields then connected on 15-of-26 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown versus New England.
"Four of his starts, he’s thrown for under 60 yards," former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said about Fields. "...You’re not making anybody on the team better with [Fields] at quarterback right now. Because he’s not playing with confidence, he’s not playing with rhythm, he’s not playing on time. It’s hurting the offensive coordinator, it’s hurting the confidence of all those guys, it’s hurting the growth of all those guys."
According to Pro Football Reference, Fields will enter the weekend ranked 29th in the league among qualified players with a 38.0 adjusted QBR and 33rd with an average of 139.9 passing yards per game.
Fitzpatrick and Gonzalez agree that Glenn needs to bench Fields, if only to avoid losing the locker room amid what could quickly become a disastrous season for the Jets. Former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman echoed such takes.
"You’re not building winning habits by keeping Justin Fields at quarterback and not playing Tyrod Taylor," Sherman added. "I don’t get what their logic is, unless they’re not concerned about winning this year."
As of Friday morning, it was unclear if Fields or Taylor will start when the Jets play at the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 23. One wonders if Glenn could find himself facing a player mutiny if he doesn't give Taylor the nod ahead of Thanksgiving.
