Report shares if Giants' Abdul Carter was honest about punishment for Packers game

On Tuesday, New York Giants rookie pass-rusher Abdul Carter insisted he was benched for the opening series of the club's 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday due to a misunderstanding regarding getting treatment during a team walk-through.

Later on Tuesday, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post backed Carter's claim.

Was Abdul Carter receiving treatment during missed walk-through?

"Abdul Carter was receiving treatment in the red light therapy bed at the Giants' facility Friday morning when his team was on the field," Schwartz revealed.

A previous report said that Carter was punished because he "was asleep in the team facility" and "missed a walk-through leading up to the (Packers) game." According to Schwartz, such stories are "inaccurate."

Per Schwartz, Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka "made some nuanced changes to the practice schedule" after former head coach Brian Daboll was dismissed on Nov. 10. Thus, Carter mistakenly thought he had time for treatment. Schwartz also pointed out that the Giants' recovery room is "not in a highly trafficked area," which makes it possible that Carter truly wasn't aware he was missing a walk-through.

Has Abdul Carter been guilty of bad habits throughout rookie season?

As part of Monday's report, The Athletic's Dan Duggan noted that "being late to meetings has been a trend during Carter’s rookie season that" Daboll "let slide" earlier in the fall. The following day, Carter said that missing the walk-through was a one-time thing. Carter added that he didn't "want anonymous sources to say these types of things about me that are untrue."

Interestingly, Schwartz mentioned that "there are conflicting accounts from The Post’s sources regarding whether Carter has had issues with repeated lateness this season." This indicates that somebody within the Giants wants it known that Carter hasn't always been on time for certain get-togethers since early September.

This saga repeatedly generated discussions on New York sports talk radio programs over the first two days of the midweek because Carter has thus far tallied just 0.5 sacks while featuring for a 2-9 team. He and the rest of the Giants should want to put this matter far behind them ahead of this coming Sunday's game at the Detroit Lions (6-4). As of Wednesday morning, ESPN BET had Big Blue as a 10.5-point underdog for that contest.
