The Buffalo Bills were trailing the Houston Texans by seven points with 10:14 remaining in regulation of Thursday's game when Buffalo running back James Cook was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 at the Houston 23-yard line.
After that play, cameras picked up Bills quarterback Josh Allen appearing to say, "What are we doing?" Following Buffalo's 23-19 loss that dropped the club to 7-4 on the season, Allen addressed what became somewhat of a viral moment.
"Just frustration on my part," Allen said about his reaction, per Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. "In a situation like that, probably should have just banged a timeout. Just getting ... we got the play in late. Didn't give ourselves a chance there."
Shortly after the New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll earlier this month, some suggested Daboll could soon replace current Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Daboll previously served as Allen's OC from 2018 through the 2021 season.
Such whispers emerged before the Bills dropped their second game in three tries and before Allen tallied zero touchdowns against Houston. He was responsible for three passing touchdowns and three rushing scores in Buffalo's Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 16.
"They wanted it today," Allen said about the Texans.
At Houston's NRG Stadium, Allen took eight sacks and endured 12 quarterback hits. ESPN stats show that six Texans players recorded at least half a sack on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, Allen seemed to deal with a sore left shoulder and a hurting right hand that he was seen shaking out on multiple occasions during the game.
"Well, when they hit the quarterback 12 times, I don't like that," Bills head coach Sean McDermott admitted after the defeat. "I don't like that stat at all. And it's not a healthy way to play or a healthy way to keep our quarterback healthy through the remainder of the season. So, that's just not a good formula there."
The Bills now have a bit of a break before they will begin preparing to play at the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) on Nov. 30. For what it's worth, history shows teams often use these "mini-byes" to make a noteworthy change.
One can't help but wonder if McDermott will give Daboll a call over the upcoming weekend.
