Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame deliver emphatic statements in 70-7 rout of Syracuse

Notre Dame entered Saturday's against Syracuse very much on the College Football Playoff bubble. It was No. 9 in the most recent rankings, already had two losses, had not played the most daunting schedule and does not have a conference championship game to really boost its resume.

It needs style points.

It did not just need to win its remaining two regular-season games against Syracuse and Stanford; it needed to win convincingly.

Well, mission accomplished on Saturday in a 70-7 win over Syracuse that was already a laugher within the first 10 minutes of the game.

It was not only an emphatic win for Notre Dame's playoff chances, but it was also a huge statement for running back Jeremiyah Love in his quest for the Heisman Trophy.

Notre Dame jumped out to 21-0 lead before taking offensive snap

Notre Dame left no doubt in this game from the first beginning, jumping out to a 21-0 lead before taking its first snap on offense.

It did so by returning two interceptions for touchdowns and also returning a blocked punt for a touchdown, all within the first five minutes of the game.

When Notre Dame did finally touch the ball on offense, it scored on its second offensive snap when Love ran for a 45-yard touchdown on his first carry of the game.

By the end of the first quarter, it was 35-0 and Notre Dame never looked back.

Or stopped rolling.

It was the first in program history Notre Dame ever scored 35 points in the first quarter of a game.

Notre Dame finished the game with 329 yards rushing, only 67 yards passing and lost the time of possession margin by a 42-minute to 18-minute margin. That sort of thing is going to happen with two defensive touchdowns, a special teams touchdown and several big plays.

Jeremiyah Love's Heisman case keeps building

Saturday was not only a huge day for Notre Dame's playoff chances. It was also a massive day for Love to continue building a Heisman Trophy case as he rushed for 171 yards on only eight carries, scoring three touchdowns on runs of 45, 16 and 68.

With that performance, he is now up to 1,306 yards on 185 carries for the season (seven yards per carry) and 17 touchdown runs.

He has also added an additional 274 yards on 26 receptions (10.5 yards per reception) with three more touchdowns.

In total, that is 1,580 yards from scrimmage on only 211 touches (7.4 yards per touch).

He is the most impactful player in college football this season and is a game-changer every single week.
