Pistons mirror franchise's championship seasons, tie win streak record

The 2025-26 Detroit Pistons are playing like they are one of the best teams in franchise history. While that may seem a bit hyperbolic, it's also a fact based on their current win streak.

On Monday, Cade Cunningham and the Pistons tied the longest win streak in franchise history, matching marks set by two of Detroit's three championship seasons — 1989-90 and 2003-04.

The now 15-2 Pistons beat the Indiana Pacers, 122-117, to tie the record, staying red hot after going 2-2 in their first four games, which even included losing the season opener to the surprising Chicago Bulls on Oct. 22.

And even though Cunningham led the way — he registered another double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds and then even sprinkled in six assists, the Pistons showed off their depth as well.

Pistons show off depth beyond Cade Cunningham

Much like how the last Pistons title team played over two decades ago, six different Pistons reached double-digits in scoring and Jalen Duren also posted a double-double of his own, scoring 17 points with 12 boards and a pair of helpers.

Detroit's win streak has also helped propel Cunningham into the early-season MVP conversation. The former No. 1 pick who made his first All-Star team last season was just two rebounds shy of a 29-point triple-double on Sunday when Detroit's win streak reached the longest since the 2003-04 team.

Cunningham entered the night averaging 27.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 9.9 assists despite missing three games.

Will this Detroit team move past the others and break the record?

So even though it may come as a surprise to some, Cunningham and the Pistons are now in the company of Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Ben Wallace and every other champion from the great teams of the past.

Detroit will get that chance at history on Wednesday on the road against the Boston Celtics.
