SEC expert Paul Finebaum believes Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin is as good as gone.
Finebaum doesn't necessarily feel that's the best thing for Kiffin, who has had an up-and-down career as a head coach. With the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers calling, though, Finebaum thinks there's one very specific reason Kiffin is going to end up leaving Oxford.
Ultimately, it comes down to Kiffin's belief, or lack thereof, in the Rebels as a championship contender. That's, at least, what Finebaum thinks is going on.
“I think he’s best off where he is,” Finebaum said on ESPN's "Get Up" on Tuesday (h/t On3). “That’s where he’s happy … Kiffin has battled a lot of demons, and he’s overcome them, but he seems intent on leaving. And the reason is very simple. I don’t believe Lane Kiffin thinks he can win a national championship at all this. I don’t know why he doesn’t think that, considering where they are in the polls right now and the amount of money, but clearly, as he looks around, Florida seems like a slightly better fit, but LSU is the hot school. LSU has won national championships under (Nick) Saban, Les Miles, even Ed Orgeron. They didn’t win one in four years under Brian Kelly, and that’s why they paid to get rid of him.”
Finebaum's point about Ole Miss being right in this thing is a good one. If Kiffin doesn't believe he can win a championship with the Rebels, he simply needs to look around. He has the Rebels at 10-1 and ranked No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

He's beaten programs like LSU (ironically) and Oklahoma this season and is one win over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl away from capping off arguably the best season in program history since 1962, when the Rebels went 10-0 (6-0 SEC) and won the national championship.
The Rebels are very much so in a championship drive, but if Kiffin really doesn't think they can do it when all is said and done, perhaps he's not the right guy for the job in Oxford.
