The Carolina Panthers entered Monday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers with an opportunity to take the NFC South lead. Instead, they laid an egg in a 20-9 snoozefest.
Now the Panthers are back to the drawing board after a blown opportunity to a team that gave them multiple chances to hang around, including three interceptions from the defense. Even with the ball at the 16-yard-line following one of those picks, quarterback Bryce Young gave it right back to the 49ers with one of his own four plays later.
This was a time for Young to prove himself on a big stage, but it ended with another disappointing loss with a lackluster performance, something former player and current NFL analyst Marcus Spears expressed his frustration with during Tuesday's edition of "NFL Live."
"I thought Bryce Young missed an opportunity to have a phenomenal night, especially after your defense gives you three turnovers," Spears said. "... But these are those games where you answer questions about if you're the guy going forward. You have to capitalize. You're on the road, 'Monday Night Football,' the biggest stage during the regular season and you have some opportunities. There were some misses in this game by Bryce as well. Ball coming out of his hand, kind of unorthodox.
"I was not happy about his performance with some of the opportunities that his defense was able to create for him. You get three turnovers in a football game and you only come away with nine points. Yeah, let's give Robert Saleh and that defense a lot of credit, but that quarterback is supposed to get you in the endzone on points a lot of those times."

The Panthers were only trailing 7-0 when Young threw the brutal interception at the 1-yard-line instead of electing to run for the easy score. He acknowledged that he "should have made a better decision" following the loss.
Young was 18-of-29 for 169 yards with one TD and two interceptions in the game, but that followed a season-high 448 pass yards in the Week 11 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Young has passed for 41 TDs in his career so far, but giveaways have been an issue. While the 111 sacks do not help, he has accounted for 28 interceptions and has only led Carolina to one win over a team with a record above .500 this season when the Panthers defeated the Green Bay Packers in Week 9.
The Panthers (6-6) have played well enough defensively and had a golden opportunity to overtake the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) for first place in the division. With a pair of meetings against Tampa Bay remaining in their last five games, the Panthers still have everything in front of them.
However, with a 14% chance to reach the playoffs according to NFL.com, it is going to be a challenge for the Panthers, especially after a missed opportunity on Monday night.
