Khris Middleton takes revenge on old team in Wizards' upset win

The Milwaukee Bucks traded longtime forward Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards last season in a misguided playoff push. On Monday, Middleton's big shots sent his old team to its eighth loss in nine games.

Middleton scored 15 points, including eight in the final four minutes, as his Wizards beat the Bucks, 129-126. He gave the Wizards the lead by scoring five straight points late, then his old teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo missed a free throw and fouled out in the final seconds.

Milwaukee's Khris Middleton trade was a disaster

Middleton made three All-Star teams and won a title with the Bucks alongside Antetokounmpo, but struggled with injuries that forced him to miss 102 games in his last three seasons in Milwaukee. The Bucks, desperate to make a playoff push with Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, traded Middleton to the Wizards, along with a 2028 first-round pick and their 2024 first-round pick, AJ Johnson, to get forward Kyle Kuzma.

Kuzma didn't end up being the third star Milwaukee wanted. He averaged 14.5 points and shot 33.3 percent from three-point range for the Bucks, with as many assists as turnovers. In the playoffs, that fell to 5.8 PPG. This season, Kuzma lost his starting spot until Taurean Prince's back injury. He's a bad fit who is signed for nearly $43M for this season and next.

On Monday, Middleton outscored Kuzma by 12 points. In the clutch, Middleton delivered multiple big plays. In the game's biggest moments, Kuzma was on the bench.

Bucks have misjudged their championship window

Milwaukee fell to 11th place in the Eastern Conference at 9-13. It has been bad when Antetokounmpo doesn't play — 1-5 with the Greek Freak out — and mediocre with him on the floor, 8-8. It has been so desperate to chase titles with Antetokounmpo that it has mortgaged its future.

Giving up a 2024 first-rounder and a future 2028 pick for Kuzma, who is at best an average NBA player, was bad enough without the team also losing Middleton, the player, along with Middleton's useful matching salary. This season, it mortgaged more of its future by waiving and stretching Damian Lillard's salary, meaning it'll take a $20M salary-cap hit for the next five seasons for a player who won't be on the team.

Now, the Bucks don't own their own first-round pick for the next five years, or their own second-round pick for seven. They have a team that lost to the two-win Wizards. In their efforts to improve the team to keep Antetokounmpo from leaving, they've almost guaranteed they'll have no choice but to trade him.
