The Anaheim Ducks are now going to be without both members of their usual goaltending tandem, as Petr Mrazek is now sidelined with an injury, joining starter Lukas Dostal.
Head coach Joel Quenneville told members of the media, including Zach Cavanagh of The Sporting Tribune, that Mrazek will be out for approximately two to three weeks with a lower-body injury.
The news comes on the heels of Dostal’s upper-body injury, which also came with an estimated recovery timeline of two to three weeks that began on Black Friday.
Mrazek, a 33-year-old veteran from Ostrava, Czechia, had posted a .876 save percentage and 3.69 goals against average to go with his 3-3-0 record across seven starts. Mrazek is in his first year with the Ducks after coming over in the trade that sent longtime Anaheim netminder John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings during the offseason.
Mrazek debuted with Detroit in the 2012-13 season, and his most successful years came in 2015-16 as Detroit’s starter before a strong three-year run with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2018-2021. Mrazek has also had stints with Philadelphia, Chicago and Toronto throughout his lengthy career.
With both Dostal and Mrazek out of the picture, Anaheim will turn to a duo of Ville Husso and Vyacheslav Buteyets between the pipes. Husso has plenty of NHL experience, putting up career marks that include a .901 SV% and 3.04 GAA in 148 regular season appearances.
Husso has made three starts already this year, going 2-1-0 while turning shots aside at a .880 clip. He made four starts with Anaheim last year.
Buteyets is a 23-year-old Russian that the Ducks chose in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. He has yet to make his NHL debut, and has just five games split between the past two seasons at the AHL level with the San Diego Gulls.
Despite cooling off a bit of late, Anaheim still occupies the first-place spot in the Pacific Division.
