'TNF' takeaways: Cowboys defense remains big issue in loss to Lions

The Detroit Lions scored a massive win in their push for a playoff spot on Thursday night, opening a massive Week 14 schedule with a 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some key takeaways from the game for both teams.

The Dallas Cowboys defense is still a huge issue

The Cowboys have completely turned their season around in the second half and have been making a valiant push for a playoff spot in the NFC, and perhaps even the NFC East crown. Their offense has been the driving force behind that late-season surge.

But as they showed on Thursday night, their defense, which has been a massive issue all season, is still going to be their biggest obstacle to overcome. While trade-deadline addition Quinnen Williams has made some big plays and a nice impact since his arrival, he alone is not enough to fix this mess.

Not only did Dallas' defense give up 44 points on Thursday, but it allowed 408 total yards, six plays of 25 yards or more and could not get a big stop when needed in the second half as the Cowboys tried to mount a late comeback.

Their remaining schedule, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles' recent struggles, will keep them in the playoff race, especially as their offense continues to perform. The defense might still be too much to overcome.

Amon-Ra St. Brown played and made massive impact

There was some concern as to whether or not Lions star receiver Amo-Ra St. Brown would be able to play, entering the week as a game-time decision.

He not only played, but he also played a massive role in the Lions' win, catching six passes for 92 yards, including a huge play late in the fourth quarter to help put the game away for the Lions.

He is a difference-maker in their offense and played like it on Thursday. Even at less than 100% healthy.

Another Thursday night game with major injuries

There are a lot of criticisms with the NFL's desire to keep scheduling Thursday night games, and one of the biggest is the impact it has on injuries and player health. Thursday's game saw two key players — one for each team — leave with injuries.

The Cowboys lost star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a concussion, while Lions safety Brian Branch had to be carted off the field in the fourth quarter.

If either injury ends up being long-term, it could play a major role in the NFC playoff race.

Brandon Aubrey remains the best kicker in football

If there is a bright spot for the Cowboys in this game, it is the fact kicker Brandon Aubrey remains some sort of a cheat code for them.

He was 5-of-5 in field-goal attempts on Thursday, including a 63-yard field goal in the third quarter. As noted by the Amazon Prime broadcast, there have been 15 field goals of 63 yards or more in NFL history. Aubrey has three of them. He has now made six field goals of 60 yards or more in his career.
