Kentucky's $22 million roster not living up to its price tag

Life comes at you fast in college basketball, and no team has learned that better in the young 2025-26 season than Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats

Pope's $22 million roster and the memories of a Sweet 16 run in his first season in Lexington brought high expectations from a fan base used to winning.

But through nine games, that $22 million roster has become more of a meme than a blueprint to be followed. The No. 18 Wildcats suffered their fourth loss of the season on Friday in a 94-59 thrashing at the hands of No. 11 Gonzaga.

All four of Kentucky's losses have come to ranked teams this season, including a loss to in-state rival Louisville and a 83-66 loss to Michigan State. All five of Kentucky's wins are against Quad 4 opponents.

Road doesn't get any easier for 'Cats going forward

Things won't get any easier for Kentucky going forward, either. Two "cupcake" games against North Carolina Central and Bellarmine remain, but Kentucky's other two nonconference games are against No. 22 Indiana on Dec. 13 and No. 23 St. John's on Dec. 20.

Then comes the gauntlet of Southeastern Conference play, which begins for UK with a road trip to Tuscaloosa on Jan. 3 to play No. 12 Alabama.

If Pope and Kentucky can't get things figured out fast, it could be a long season in Lexington and not long at all before talk about Pope's job security becomes water-cooler fodder across the Commonwealth.
