As much as there has been talk about the Edmonton Oilers and their goaltending situation, nothing is concrete in terms of a trade. The Oilers might be looking at the market and scouting teams, but most reports from trusted insiders note that, unless the team finds a guaranteed upgrade and health is not an issue, the team will stand pat with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard.
That hasn’t stopped the speculation. Anytime anything even remotely unexpected happens, social media users, accounts with “sources”, and the fan base tend to run with it.
That happened on Thursday night after Skinner gave a very long hug to Pickard after the Oilers beat the Seattle Kraken 9-4. What was likely more of a long embrace because Pickard got scored on with just 4.5 seconds remaining in the game — and it ruined his chance to have an above-average-.900 save percentage in the game — fans assumed the long hug meant it was hinting at Pickard’s last game for the Oilers.
Pickard is extremely popular in the locker room, and the Oilers players do not want to see him moved. However, his numbers haven’t been strong this season, and speculation is that a trade might be coming.
People started running with the trade narrative, as did a polarizing social account that often posts “insider” information without verified sources. On Friday, the "2 Mutts Hockey Podcast" posted, “We are hearing that Tristan Jarry is being traded to the Edmonton Oilers & the Penguins will retain 50% of his salary.”

If this trade does happen, it will be a big story in Edmonton. And, if this account proves to have been accurate with their report — or threw a dart and hit a bullseye — there will be a ton of talk about it. Fans will debate the acquisition of Jarry, some suggesting it was a needed move. Others will wonder if he’s an upgrade. Others still will talk more about what the Oilers have to give away to make the deal and the money work.
If the trade doesn’t go down, the account will likely claim the deal “fell apart” at the finish line.
As of late Friday, nothing has been confirmed. We do not have word that this is a trade rumor that fans should take seriously — at least not yet. If things change, we’ll be sure to update this story.
