There is perhaps no greater thrill for a NASCAR driver than winning a race at the Daytona International Speedway.
The hallowed Florida ground that was envisioned and subsequently built less than five miles from the birthplace of NASCAR at the Streamline Hotel is the equivalent of Fenway Park, Lambeau Field and Madison Square Garden.
Winning at Daytona is akin to winning at Indianapolis — the accomplishment sticks with a driver not just for the rest of their career, but for the rest of their life and beyond.
Former NASCAR driver Michael Annett, who died Friday at age 39, scored his only career victory in NASCAR's top-three series at Daytona in February 2019.
For Annett, whose career had lasted just over a decade to that point, the win was vindication for his hard work and a ticket to the postseason. For his team, JR Motorsports, it was a victory that proved little had changed in the hierarchy of the NASCAR Xfinity Series following Tyler Reddick winning the 2018 championship with the organization.
I remember watching Michael Annett finally getting that first career Xfinity win that was long over due and it was special to do it at Daytona, God speed Michael Annett you'll be missed dearly by the whole NASCAR community ❤️ pic.twitter.com/pxidTb1XQ9

But in hindsight, in the wake of Annett's tragic death and in remembrance of his NASCAR career, it was a day in the sun that the Des Moines, Iowa, native deserved.
Annett led 45 of 120 laps on a gorgeous afternoon in Daytona Beach, holding off his JRM teammate in Justin Allgaier, to cross the line first and collect the first checkered flag of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career in his 230th start.
Annett parked his No. 1 Chevrolet on the start/finish line of the 2.5-mile behemoth that is Daytona, climbing out of his car and running up the 18-degree banking in Daytona's tri-oval to grab the checkered flag.
He held onto the checkered flag until he rolled into Daytona's iconic victory lane and into the history books, where his name will forever be mentioned among those who managed to conquer Daytona.
