Yankees GM Brian Cashman hints at difficulties on the trade market

The New York Yankees have been mostly quiet at the Winter Meetings.

Other than Aaron Boone claiming that they weren't that far behind the Toronto Blue Jays, there hasn't been much news to report about the Bronx Bombers.

Notably, that may not change in the next couple of days.

According to general manager Brian Cashman, teams are playing hardball in trade negotiations, and they may have no choice but to stay put.

Opposing teams want the Yankees to overpay

“We’re just staying engaged, trying to match up with some things. But it's been tough so far. Don't like the asks coming our way, and I guess the opposing teams don’t like what I'm trying to pull from them on the trade stuff. We do have some conversations that possibly could lead somewhere,” Cashman said, per Bryan Hoch.

Of course, this isn't anything new. Opposing teams and star free agents have always had a higher asking price when it comes to the Yankees, knowing that they will probably meet their demands.

They don't negotiate with players in arbitration, and, as the winningest organization in professional baseball history, other teams will rarely cooperate with them in their pursuit of dominance.

That being said, it's been more than a decade since the Yankees won the World Series.

And while spending the most -- or nearly the most -- money hasn't necessarily done much to help their case, this team will need to figure out how to improve its clearly flawed roster.
