With the Winter Meetings already underway, the Boston Red Sox are working around the clock to bolster their roster.
They know they must give Alex Cora more to work with, and they've been one of the most active teams in the early hours of the meetings. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, they're one of the five teams keeping tabs on Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte.
"Ketel Marte market heating up: Red Sox, Mariners, Jays, possibly Phillies and Rays. D-Backs seeking big package understandably for superstar 2B," Heyman wrote on X.
However, while there's no shortage of suitors for Marte's services, MLB Network's Jon Morosi believes that the Red Sox have an edge over their competitors.
"The Red Sox are viewed as stronger candidates to land Ketel Marte than their AL East rival Blue Jays, because Boston has greater depth of MLB-ready starting pitchers," Morosi explained.
Marte is coming off back-to-back Silver Slugger seasons, and he's going to be one of the most coveted players in the next couple of days. The 32-year-old slashed .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs and 72 RBI in 126 games for the Diamondbacks last year, and he'd give Cora's team the type of offensive punch it lacked to keep up with the Toronto Blue Jays at the top of the AL East. The Red Sox seem eager to make a splash, and they will spare no effort in getting some star power to the Green Monster, regardless of how much they have to give up.
