Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season as a head coach.
He took the reins of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007, so that's certainly one of the most impressive streaks in pro football.
However, the Steelers haven't won a playoff game in eight years, and with the team constantly hovering around .500, the fan base may have lost its patience with the head coach.
There have been rumblings about Tomlin's future for the past couple of seasons now. However, his response to that may not appease the fans.
"Man, I've been in the hot seat for 19 years," Tomlin said when asked about his job security, per Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated.
He may feel that way, or maybe he was referring more to his approach to his job, but taken literally the facts suggest otherwise.
For starters, the Steelers rarely fire their coaches. He's just the 16th head coach in franchise history, and the third since 1969.
Moreover, the ownership has always had his back, even urging him to come back when there were rumors of him being ready to take a sabbatical after last season.
Even star players like T.J. Watt went on the record to claim that they would request a trade if Tomlin was fired last season.
The fact of the matter is that the Steelers have settled for being good, not great. Just making the playoffs and not having a losing season wasn't the standard this once-great organization was held to.
This roster looks long overdue for a rebuild, and as great a coach as Tomlin is, both parties might actually benefit from a split.
For now, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.
