Former Red Sox top prospect Kyle Teel could change Sox again

The Boston Red Sox dealt catcher Kyle Teel to the Chicago White Sox as part of the trade that brought Garrett Crochet to Boston. Teel may end up changing his Sox again.

According to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, the Red Sox are interested in re-acquiring Teel. While McAdam did note that nothing is close, the two sides had discussed Teel throughout the summer as well.

At the time of the trade, Teel was the Red Sox's third-best prospect, per MLB.com, and considered a solid all-around hitter, capable of using the entire diamond while making plenty of hard contact. Defensively, Teel drew high marks for his strong arm and agility and quickness behind the plate.

Boston Red Sox may be looking to re-acquire their catcher of the future

Teel showed his promise during his four months in Chicago. He posted a .273/.375/.411 batting line over his 297 plate appearances, hitting eight homers and 11 doubles. That type of production from a 23-year-old catcher would normally make him a building block on a rebuilding team such as the White Sox.

However, the White Sox have another young catcher in Edgar Quero. The 22-year-old posted a solid .268/.333/.356 batting line with five homers and 17 doubles over his 403 plate appearances. As the White Sox are in an enviable position of having two solid young catchers, they have reportedly received a great deal of interest in both backstops.

The Red Sox would also appear to be set behind the plate. Carlos Narvaez had a solid rookie season in 2025, and Connor Wong has displayed the potential to be a viable starting option. However, both catchers battled injuries last season and do not have the same upside Teel possesses. Wong also has some defensive versatility as he has seen time at first and second base, potentially making him an intriguing utility option. While it would be strange to re-acquire a player that was traded away just over a year ago, Teel could end up being the Red Sox's catcher of the future once again.
