The past couple of days have been brutal to New York Mets fans.
Right after losing star closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who agreed to give him just $3 million more, they've now lost Pete Alonso. Alonso agreed to a massive five-year, $155 million deal to join the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
And while the initial reports indicated that the Mets were hesitant to give Alonso more than three years, Joel Sherman of the New York Post now reports that they didn't even make him an offer.
"Source: The Mets never made an offer as it became clear to them that Alonso was getting bids for more dollars and years than in their comfort zone," Sherman wrote.
Clearly, president of baseball operations David Stearns doesn't want to throw owner Steve Cohen's money around. It's still early in the offseason, but given the front office's approach, it's hard to believe they will make the necessary moves to make up for these losses. They're not sending the right message to fans.
Granted, perhaps giving Alonso the highest AAV ever for a first baseman was a bit overblown, but he was a fan favorite, a homegrown talent and the franchise's all-time leader in home runs. He was also still in his physical prime.
The Mets' late-season collapse was hard to explain and even tougher to stomach for the fans. Now, it's starting to look like those were the good old days, and it might get much worse before it gets better.
