Klay Thompson joined the Mavericks to chase another deep postseason run next to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. That vision has shifted, and according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Thompson would prefer to land with a contender if Dallas decides to explore his market.
The Mavericks are open to discussing several veterans, including Thompson, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford, as the front office evaluates its direction following a 9-16 start.
Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million deal with Dallas in July 2024, believing he was stepping into a Finals-ready situation. With Doncic gone and the Mavericks below .500, teams understand the four-time champion has interest in joining a more competitive situation over the final two years of his contract.
The 35-year-old has appeared in 23 games this season, averaging 11 points while shooting 35 percent from three. His best outing came on November 29, when he scored 23 against the Clippers.
Thompson does not have a no-trade clause, and his $18 million cap number next season could make him a realistic target for playoff teams seeking shooting and experience.
