Nathan MacKinnon passes Joe Sakic for most goals in Avalanche history

Having already accomplished so much, Nathan MacKinnon can now add sitting at the top of a major career list to his resume. The Colorado Avalanche superstar center is now the team's all-time leader in goals.

MacKinnon passed Avalanche legend and current team president of hockey operations Joe Sakic during Colorado's game against the defending back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

MacKinnon's historic goal, his 25th of the season and 392nd of his career, came against Daniil Tarasov as part of a three-goal period for Colorado. He also recorded an assist on another goal during the Avalanche's big offensive performance.

MacKinnon has now scored more than any other player in Avalanche history

In addition to MacKinnon's 392 goals, he has 676 assists and 1,068 points in 901 NHL regular-season games.

While Sakic dropping down to second won't make Avalanche fans appreciate him any less, MacKinnon ascending over a legend of the sport shows just how consistent he's been to this point in his career.

Can Nathan MacKinnon catch Joe Sakic again?

At only 30, MacKinnon also doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. He's on pace for his third-straight 100-plus-point season. Setting a new season-high for goals is even possible for MacKinnon, who scored 51 two years ago when he finished with 140 total points.

It will remain to be seen if MacKinnon can reach Sakic in overall career goals. Sakic finished his Hall of Fame career with 625 goals, with 391 of them coming as a member of the Avalanche and the first 234 while a member of the Quebec Nordiques before the franchise's eventual move to Colorado.

Although before he can worry about getting over 600 goals, MacKinnon would love to match Sakic in championships by lifting the Stanley Cup for the second time.
