Three reasons why Michigan has a shot at poaching Kalen DeBoer from Alabama

The Michigan Wolverines have fired head coach Sherrone Moore for cause. It was a shocking turn of events, and as it turns out, it has become a rather tragic and dark situation.

While that plays out, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel will be tasked with finding a new head coach as soon as he can.

First of all, the Wolverines just brought in a rather good recruiting class in the early signing period. Firing the head coach just days later, no matter the circumstances, can throw that recruiting haul into chaos.

The Wolverines also have to be mindful of the transfer portal window opening in January. If they don't have a head coach lined up before then, they could lose a ton of players to the portal.

There are several good options for Michigan, but here's why Michigan might have a shot at poaching Kalen DeBoer from the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Kalen DeBoer is under immense pressure with the Alabama Crimson Tide

Nick Saban won six national championships at Alabama. He set the bar so high in Tuscaloosa that his heir apparent, DeBoer, has basically been set up always to disappoint the fanbase.

Even if he won the College Football Playoff this year, for instance, he'd be under pressure to do it again and again. That's the only standard that matters at Alabama, so DeBoer may never truly feel secure with the Crimson Tide.

In the meantime, Michigan can offer him the ability to still coach one of the biggest brands in sports, not just college football, and there's slightly less pressure in Ann Arbor to win it all every year.

Kalen DeBoer has Michigan ties

The average college football fan knew of DeBoer before Alabama because he took the Washington Huskies to the College Football Playoff championship game a few years ago. Ironically, his Huskies lost to Michigan.

That's not his only tie to Michigan, though, or the Big Ten, for that matter.

He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Michigan from 2014 to 2016. He was also the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana in 2019.

Perhaps the Wolverines can convince DeBoer that he's a fish out of water in the SEC and get him back into the Midwest.

The Wolverines can offer Kalen DeBoer a ton of money

DeBoer is making about $10 million a year through 2031 at Alabama.

Don't you think Michigan can match or exceed that?

Heck, the Wolverines are paying quarterback Bryce Underwood $12 million to finish the season with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of nine-to-six.

The Wolverines have a huge donor base and plenty of money to throw around. If they call DeBoer and make him an offer, Alabama will likely match or counter.

Michigan has the funds to get into that kind of battle, though, and the Wolverines could ultimately make DeBoer an even richer man.

Money talks in college football, and the Wolverines have plenty of it.
