Following a turnover-filled 22-19 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on "Monday Night Football," a lot of the blame for the recent struggles from the Philadelphia Eagles has gone to Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts.
It was the third straight loss for the Eagles and one in which Hurts committed five turnovers. The recent struggles have even led to some suggesting that the QB should be benched, something head coach Nick Sirianni immediately shut down.
Sirianni was not alone in his response, either. During an appearance on Thursday's edition of "First Take," former NFL player and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky was asked if he believes Hurts is being overly criticized right now.
"Yesterday became the dumbest conversation of the NFL season," Orlovsky said. "We had someone ask the head coach of the defending Super Bowl champions if they were going to bench their quarterback. By the way, that quarterback's fourth in the NFL in touchdowns right now. Fourth, behind (Matthew) Stafford, Josh Allen and Dak Prescott. And we're going, 'Should we bench the quarterback' like he's the only person who's not playing up to their level? Saquon Barkley's one of two running backs that have over 50 carries this year that have gone for either no yards or negative yards. Is that cause Saquon can't play anymore?"

To be fair, the Eagles are only scoring the 19th-most points in the league (22.2 PPG) and rank 22nd in passing yards (198.9 YPG), so it is fair to question Philadelphia's aerial attack. However, at 8-5, the Eagles still sit atop the NFC East ahead of the 6-6-1 Dallas Cowboys, and have a favorable matchup against the 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Even though Hurts was only 21-of-40 for 240 yards with zero TDs and four interceptions on Monday night, he only had two interceptions entering the game. Despite the criticism, Hurts only expects "good things" from the Eagles the rest of the way and is not letting the outside noise affect him.
While Orlovsky admitted that he was not always the biggest believer in Hurts when he first started, he was baffled by the suggestion to bench him.
"I was probably the most critical person of Jalen Hurts early in his career," Orlovsky said. "He has gone to the playoffs four times, he's gone to the Super Bowl twice, he's won the Super Bowl once and he was the MVP of the Super Bowl. And 10 months later, 10 months from doing that, we're going, 'Do you think we should bench the quarterback?' I believe Jalen Hurts before Monday night has thrown one interception since October. ... and we're saying, 'Should we bench the quarterback?' Do you know how stupid of a question that is? ... It's still crazy to have the quarterback in the NFL right now, who's fourth in touchdowns, have his job security in question."
To some, the current drought the Eagles are experiencing may bring back memories of the 2023 season when Philadelphia lost five of its last six regular-season games before getting blown out in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is "not worried" about that happening, and a favorable remaining schedule should at least provide some encouragement as well.
Still, the Eagles have not looked the same during their three-game losing streak, and it is clear the noise is only going to ramp up until the on-field performance improves.
