Mets face roadblock in trade for Luis Robert Jr.

New York Mets fans have gone through it over the past week or so.

From losing Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers to watching Pete Alonso take his talents to Baltimore, the new era has gotten off to a rocky start. However, the front office has preached patience, and with plenty of offseason left to go, they should be keeping tabs on several players.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, they've already inquired about Luis Robert Jr. Then again, his big salary could be a problem.

The Mets want Luis Robert Jr., but there's a catch

“The Mets inquired about Luis Robert. But for the Mets to surrender prospects, they want money back to offset Robert’s $20M salary and hard-line White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf isn’t seen as likely to give money to Steve Cohen’s team,” Heyman wrote

White Sox GM Chris Getz said in early December that the team wasn't shopping the former All-Star. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time an executive says that and ends up moving the player anyway.

Robert is as talented as they come, but he's struggled with consistency, and the White Sox may not get the prime value they would want in return.

He's coming off back-to-back seasons hitting below .225 and with an OPS below .670 after a breakout campaign, but he's still an elite defensive outfielder, not to mention one of the best base stealers in the game.

He's well worth the gamble, and the White Sox would probably be thrilled to shed $20M off their payroll.

Whether the Mets have a strong enough interest in him to keep pushing remains to be seen.
