As had been expected, first-year New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed on Friday that undrafted rookie Brady Cook will serve as the club's starting quarterback when the 3-10 Jets play at the 9-4 Jacksonville Jaguars this coming Sunday.
Cook is set to make some history in the process.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets haven't started an undrafted rookie quarterback since J.J. Jones got the nod for a game in December 1975. Jones failed to impress for only a few series before he was replaced by a banged-up Joe Namath.
Cook had been the Jets' emergency option at the position throughout the season until Justin Fields was ruled out of the Week 14 game against the Miami Dolphins because of a knee issue. Starter Tyrod Taylor then picked up a groin injury during the Miami contest, and neither Fields nor Taylor will be available this coming weekend.
Cook replaced Taylor on Dec. 7 and completed 14-of-30 passes for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions versus the Dolphins. He also took six sacks in the 34-10 blowout loss.
Glenn noted on Friday that Cook has had opportunities to practice with the first-team offense for the first time this season.
"I have all the confidence in the world," Glenn said about what he expects from Cook against the Jaguars. "...He'll be a good player in this league, and he'll have his opportunity again this week."
Shortly after Glenn offered his update, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Jets as massive 13.5-point underdogs against the Jaguars.
While the Jets are already eliminated from playoff contention, the Jaguars lead the 8-5 Houston Texans and the 8-5 Indianapolis Colts in the battle for the AFC South division title. Jacksonville also has a chance to finish Week 18 as the AFC's No. 1 seed.
44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers ending his retirement to join the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad became the most-discussed NFL-related topic of the week. Like Tom Brady, it seems that Glenn is a former player who has been inspired to follow in Rivers' footsteps:
