The Pittsburgh Steelers made a late-season addition to their wide receiver room when they signed Adam Thielen ahead of Week 14, and there is now speculation that another could be coming.
Veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard was cut by the New York Jets on Tuesday, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. Lazard asked the Jets to move on from him and had his request granted.
Lazard has been with the Jets since 2023, which is the year the team acquired Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers. At the time, Rodgers had given New York a wish list of players he wanted the team to pursue, and Lazard was said to have been on it.
Rodgers and Lazard played together in Green Bay from 2018-22. Lazard's best season was in 2022, when he had 60 catches for 788 yards and six touchdowns. He had 14 touchdowns combined across the 2021 and 2022 seasons while catching passes from Rodgers.
Lazard has not been very productive since he signed with the Jets. Though, he did have 37 catches for 530 yards and six touchdowns last season as Rodgers rounded back into form following the former MVP's Achilles surgery.
This season, Lazard has just 10 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. Of course, the 30-year-old is on arguably the worst team in football and has been trying to overcome poor quarterback play.
The Steelers have looked good on offense over their last two games. Rodgers completed 23-of-27 passes for 224 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Pittsburgh's 28-15 win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
The Steelers might be satisfied with a wide receiver depth chart that features DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who also played with Rodgers in Green Bay. But if Rodgers wants Pittsburgh to claim Lazard off waivers or sign him as a free agent, that request would probably be fairly easy to accommodate.
