Yankees and Luke Weaver have mutual interest in a reunion, but there's a catch

The New York Yankees have been mostly quiet this offseason.

The fans are still waiting for updates on the Cody Bellinger saga, and the team made no moves at the Winter Meetings. That's why they can't afford to lose Luke Weaver as well.

According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, there's mutual interest in a reunion, but the Yankees will face plenty of competition for his services.

Multiple teams want to sign Luke Weaver

"The Yankees have expressed 'genuine' interest in re-signing Weaver, according to a league source, and the 32-year-old reliever would be interested in rejoining New York," Kirschner reported. "Talks between the Yankees and Weaver are not far along. The right-hander is weighing his options after about 10 teams have checked in on him this offseason."

Weaver has been one of the most consistent relievers in the game since he moved to the Yankees' bullpen.

He's posted a 3.21 ERA and a 3.58 FIP over 148.2 innings of work over the past couple of seasons, all while logging 12 saves.

He closed out the season on a low note, though, logging a 9.64 ERA in September and struggling with his command.

That being said, the Yankees can't afford to let him go. With guys like Tyler Rogers, Edwin Diaz, Kyle Finnegan and Emilio Pagan no longer available, there's not a surplus of high-end and proven relievers out there.

GM Brian Cashman hinted at difficulties in the trade market for the Yankees, and they must prioritize retaining their own free agents if they want to keep pace with the Toronto Blue Jays.
