A report from earlier in December suggested that Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam wanted to run it back with head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry for another season, in part because the Haslam family believed it had found "the right structure and mix of people to run their football operation."
It sounds like somebody within the Haslams is now having second thoughts about the Browns' regime.
"I’ll say again that I think owner Jimmy Haslam really likes coach and GM," NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote for his latest mailbag. "But given how the team has looked as of late, it’s fair to ask whether Kevin Stefanski can reignite the spark his Browns had during the first four years he and GM Andrew Berry ran the team. Which is to say, I think some hard conversations will be had over the next few weeks. Most folks I talk to don’t believe Haslam has made a decision yet on what he’ll do."
Breer's update indicates something changed within the Browns following Week 13. Since then, Cleveland has suffered a 31-29 home loss to a Tennessee Titans team that is 2-12. Multiple local media members then noted that it looked like the Browns "quit" during the 31-3 defeat at the Chicago Bears on Dec. 14.
The Haslams may retain Berry because multiple Cleveland rookies have shown plenty of promise during the season. That said, the Browns have gone 6-25 under Stefanski since Week 1 of the 2024 campaign. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Browns were 10-point underdogs for their home game against the Buffalo Bills (10-4) this coming Sunday.
There's at least some chance that Huntington Bank Field will be filled with more Buffalo fans than Cleveland supporters on Dec. 21.
Breer pointed out that Haslam may have reached the "it’s just time" point regarding a break-up with Stefanski. One wonders if that divorce could be finalized before Christmas if Cleveland is blown out by Buffalo.
