Current North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick hasn't worked in the NFL since he was unceremoniously shown the door by the New England Patriots in January 2024.
Belichick will turn 74 years old in April, but it sounds like at least some NFL clubs could want to speak with the living legend once the ongoing regular season wraps up.
"I'm told there's been recent interest expressed, at the very least, in speaking with Bill Belichick on an exploratory basis from two teams, per league source," NFL insider Josina Anderson shared on Thursday.
According to Anderson, "Belichick has upper-level personnel still fond of him in Atlanta, New York [and] Cleveland." Anderson was also told that "up to seven more teams are monitoring potential change at head coach (Giants and Titans are open), and up to 3-4 more teams are considering change at general manager, at this time. The Miami Dolphins already have a GM vacancy."
Belichick being linked with the New York Giants became somewhat of a yearly tradition long before the club fired Brian Daboll in November, as Belichick earned his first two career Super Bowl rings working as an assistant and defensive coordinator with the franchise from 1979-90. A November report claimed that Belichick would "walk from Chapel Hill to East Rutherford for" the Giants job.
In 2024, a report suggested that Kraft played a role in Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank hiring Raheem Morris over Belichick that offseason. More recently, Morris has become the subject of hot-seat rumors.
As for the Browns, Belichick served as their head coach from 1991 until that franchise became the Baltimore Ravens after the 1995 season. He earned a single playoff win with Cleveland. Meanwhile, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam may soon part ways with head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Per reports, Belichick would owe North Carolina a $1M buyout if he left the school for an NFL return. He is just 15 victories away from breaking Don Shula's NFL record for career wins tallied by a head coach (including regular season and postseason).
Numerous stories throughout 2025 have mentioned that Belichick's highly-publicized relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson previously raised concerns among NFL executives. It's unclear if Belichick has done anything to eliminate those alleged concerns.
If nothing else, some NFL team owners may want to at least see what's on Belichick's mind when the season wraps up.
