The Golden State Warriors let Klay Thompson walk away last season.
He signed a three-year, $50 million deal to bring his championship experience to the Dallas Mavericks and provide some much-needed long-range shooting.
Now, with Luka Doncic gone and the Mavericks sitting on a 10-17 record, the grass doesn't look greener in Texas.
Thompson has been demoted to the second unit after struggling with his shot, and this isn't the dream-like ending to a career he thought of. However, a return to the Bay Area could fix it all.
According to ESPN insider Anthony Slater, Curry could convince Thompson to return to the Bay Area, even after the way they treated him. Likewise, he could push the team to make it happen.
"Those around Thompson say they believe it could eventually happen because 'there's no one that carries more weight with Klay than Steph,' one league source said. But Curry would have to push for it," Slater reported.
Curry has never been the type of superstar who's going to make demands or threaten the front office. He's trusted them to do their thing, even to a fault.
The Mike Dunleavy Jr. era, however, has been full of miscues and bad moves.
Thompson is clearly no longer the top-three shooting guard he was during the dynasty days, and chances are that bringing him back wouldn't move the needle that much.
Then again, Thompson, Curry and Draymond Green will go down as one of the greatest trios in NBA history. As such, it only makes sense that they all ride into the sunset as a team.
