If you're a fan of Big Ten football, you'll love what college football analyst Joel Klatt is predicting for the College Football Playoff.
Klatt knows football like the back of his hand as a "talking head" and game-day analyst alongside Gus Johnson for Fox Sports. They've worked together for years and have been calling the prime-time "Big Noon" matchup every Saturday, which normally features a Big Ten team.
Perhaps it's not surprising that Klatt believes a Big Ten team will win the College Football Playoff this season. More than that, though, he thinks the championship game will be a Big Ten vs. Big Ten matchup.
On a recent edition of his show, Klatt predicted every game in the CFP. Ultimately, he winds up with the No. 5 Oregon Ducks vs. the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers in one semifinal game and the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs vs. the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes in the other.
He predicts Indiana will beat Oregon. Keep in mind, Curt Cignetti's team beat the Ducks in Autzen earlier this season, 30-20
“There’s something about this Indiana team, they’re so good, they’re great on defense, they can run it, they can throw it, and I think they’ll end the Ducks’ season and move onto the national championship," Klatt said.
In the other semifinal, Klatt predicts OSU will beat Georgia and advance to its second straight National Championship Game.
"I wish I could pick Georgia, but I can’t because of that defense for Ohio State. It’s too elite, it’s too fast, and it’s too multiple," Klatt explained.
In this scenario, the national championship would be a rematch of an epic Big Ten Championship Game that saw No. 2 Indiana beat No. 1 Ohio State, 13-10.
It's tough to beat a good team twice in college football, and Klatt clearly believes that Indiana won't be able to outsmart Ryan Day a second time. Klatt thinks the Buckeyes' championship experience will pay off, and they will walk away with their second national championship trophy.
"I think it would be tough to beat the Buckeyes twice (in a season), so I’m going to go Buckeyes as my national champion," Klatt said.
If this does play out, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti will be thrilled. The Big Ten would have three of the four semifinalists. Whether OSU or Indiana wins the title, Petitti and the Big Ten win either way.
While it is tough to beat a good team twice, let's not write Cignetti and the Hoosiers off in this scenario, though. He's proved to be the best coach in college football, and the Hoosiers have the Heisman winner on their side in quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Of course, perhaps both teams get upset earlier on in the playoffs. Either way, it will be intriguing to see it all play out, but OSU and Indiana could definitely be on a collision course.
