Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall shared some unfortunate personal news on Friday as he prepares his team for a College Football Playoff matchup against Ole Miss.
Sumrall announced in a social media post that his father, George Sumrall, has died. Sumrall shared a message along with some photos of his father with the Sumrall family.
“God gave us more time with my Dad than we thought we would get. He left this Earth last night with my Mom by his side in the house my brother Joe and I grew up in. Dad was a fighter. I learned so much from him…being a man of faith, grit, hard work, attitude, service and more,” Sumrall wrote. “Dad being there for our conference championship game two weeks ago and then the press conference in Gainesville a couple days later are memories I will never forget. He was always there for me and I know he still will be watching!
“It doesn’t get sweeter or tougher than my Mom! Mom and Dad have set a great example for Ginny and I on marriage, parenting and commitment. Love you always Dad!”

Sumrall was named the new head coach at Florida on Nov. 30, but he remains fully invested in Tulane’s pursuit of a national championship. The Green Wave are huge underdogs heading into their first-round game against Ole Miss on Saturday.
Tulane is 11-2 this season after having won the American Athletic Conference championship. Sumrall was impressive enough in his second season with the Green Wave to land one of the most coveted head coach jobs in the country. He went 9-5 last year and 23-4 across two seasons at Troy prior to being hired by Tulane.
Sumrall has done his best to remain focused on the College Football Playoff even as he prepares to juggle the pressure that goes along with being a head football coach in the SEC. He will now have to coach Tulane with a heavy heart following the passing of his father.
