Canadiens' latest acquisition could fill void left by Jake Evans injury

Although they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0, the Montreal Canadiens delivered bad news to their fans.

Jake Evans is dealing with a lower-body injury, and the Habs announced mid-game that he would not return on Saturday. That certainly was a quick momentum killer.

A few minutes earlier, he was seen heading towards the Canadiens' locker room after a sequence at centre ice. On the broadcast footage, Evans tries to continue the play, but then retreats to the bench.

When a player makes that detour, it's almost always bad news.

The Canadiens have not provided a timeline, and that's normal, especially during a game. The term "lower body" can encompass several scenarios, and the club will likely wait to gather more information before making a specific statement. The most important thing, for now, is that he was unable to return to the game against Pittsburgh.

Phillip Danault's return could offset Jake Evans' injury for Canadiens

It remains to be seen if the Canadiens will have more precise news after the game. It is not very reassuring, as it appears to be in the knee area.

It is known that Kirby Dach, Patrik Laine and David Reinbacher have all been held out long-term with that type of injury. We will have to wait and see in Evans' case.

With Evans potentially out mid-to-long term, Martin St. Louis can lean on Phillip Danault to steady the center group.

The Habs acquired Danault from the Los Angeles Kings on late Friday night, after placing Kaiden Guhle and Dach on long-term injured reserve (retroactive to the last game they played), and then demoted Jared Davidson to Laval.

Danault brings experience in Montreal and strong two-way habits. He could be a reliable defensive option, taking on tough defensive assignments and penalty-killing duties. This would allow Nick Suzuki more freedom to focus on creating offense.
