Tottenham are struggling to make an impact in the final third of the pitch under Thomas Frank.

Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League continued after they came up short against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last weekend. The nature of the defeat to Sean Dyche’s side raised eyebrows at N17, with many fans questioning whether Thomas Frank is the right man to take the club forward. The Lilywhites were second-best in almost every area of the pitch, failing to create any meaningful chances to earn a positive result.

Difficulties in the attacking third have become a recurring issue for the North Londoners. They have failed to fashion clear-cut opportunities on more than one occasion, highlighting that Thomas Frank is not currently getting the best out of his players in the final third. According to Sofascore, Spurs registered an XG of just 0.33 against Nottingham Forest, underlining their inability to create chances despite enjoying more possession.

Supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with the attackers’ failure to deliver consistently this season. Micky van de Ven, a centre-back by trade, is Tottenham’s second-highest goal scorer in all competitions, with six goals to his name. While that is an impressive return for the Dutchman, it also exposes a glaring issue within the squad and does little to reflect well on the club’s forwards.

Tottenham attackers need to step under Thomas Frank this season

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has come under heavy scrutiny due to the club’s poor Premier League form this campaign. The Lilywhites have rarely performed at their best, and fans have made it clear that they want a change in the dugout at N17 in the coming weeks. However, the blame should not rest solely on Frank, as the players themselves have also failed to step up and build on last season’s Europa League success.

Frank stressed one fix, urging Spurs’ attackers to improve their output in terms of goals and assists, while also becoming more creative in the final third. Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Football London), Frank said,

“I don’t know if there’s one main thing. But there’s no doubt that we can’t run away. We need to create a bit more. And that’s both principles and good training. And it’s been nice to have a good training week where we could actually focus a lot on that. So that definitely helps.”

The Spurs boss added,

“But also, how can you say? I’ve said it a few times. I think we have a few good players out with a lot of goals and assists in them. And we have a very good, talented group of players that haven’t produced the same numbers yet. So that’s part of it as well.”

Frank has made it clear that he wants his side to create more chances, noting that a full week on the training ground has allowed him to focus on that area of their game. The Danish tactician also believes the ongoing injury crisis at N17 has deprived the Lilywhites of some attacking quality, with several key players sidelined for long periods. However, he has urged the remaining forwards to step up in their absence and increase their goal contributions in the coming matches.

Spurs have scored 17 open-play goals in the Premier League this season, placing them fifth in the league for that metric. Even so, the majority of those goals have come from defenders and midfielders. The attackers have largely failed to make an impact, with Richarlison the lone exception after scoring seven goals so far. As a result, the onus is now on players like Randal Kolo Muani, Mathys Tel, and Wilson Odobert to deliver more consistently in the final third going forward.
