The Boston Red Sox fortified their roster by acquiring first baseman Willson Contreras on Sunday. That does not mean that they are out on one of their own free agents.
Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported that the Red Sox consider re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman "a priority." She also noted that the Red Sox have competition for his services, with the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays also showing interest.
Despite missing time with a strained right quad, Bregman had a stellar season with the Red Sox in 2025. He posted a .273/.360/.462 batting line in his 495 plate appearances, hitting 18 homers and 28 doubles.
Although Bregman struggled at home in 2025, he has historically hit well in Fenway Park. Bregman has a lifetime .283/.389/.509 batting line in 334 plate appearances at Fenway, hitting 13 homers and 25 doubles. His 13 home runs in Boston are tied for the most he has hit in any ballpark outside of Minute Maid Park.
Bregman's value goes beyond what he can provide in the lineup. He is one of the best defensive third basemen in the game, providing a drastic improvement over former third baseman Rafael Devers. Bregman was credited with three runs saved at third in 2025, making a drastic difference for the Red Sox pitching staff.
Contreras has given the Red Sox another solid bat in a lineup in need of firepower. Bringing Bregman back would not only lengthen the lineup but would help improve their defense. He is still a perfect fit for a Red Sox organization looking to take the next step and contend for a World Series title.
