Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Corey Ballentine appeared in three games for the Cowboys this season, most recently in Week 16 against the Chargers. Week 17, he will do so for the first time under contract as a member of the 53-man roster. It is, potentially, his best opportunity since playing 15 games for the Packers last season.
In Dallas, Ballentine fills the spot vacated by offensive tackle Tyler Guyton’s transfer to injured reserve. Thus far this season he has seen only special teams reps. While that role may not change, this will be his first game all year on anything more than a practice squad contract.
Ballentine has bounced around in recent months. In free agency, he signed a one-year, $1.34 million deal with the Colts but was cut on August 1, keeping $482,500 in guaranteed money. The Packers gave him a shot in the preseason before following the Colts’ example.
A month later, Ballentine joined the Cowboys’ practice squad. In the interval, New England had signed Ballentine to its own practice reserves on August 28. Ballentine appeared in one game as a Patriots special teamer before being sent on his way and ending up in Dallas.
The seven-year veteran carved out a backup role in Green Bay over the past two-and-a-half seasons. After joining the team in 2022, Ballentine played 29 games and made seven starts from 2023-2024. Two seasons ago, as a Packer, he recorded his only career interception and seven passes defensed, adding a career-best 43 tackles.
Eliminated from playoff contention, perhaps the Cowboys give Ballentine his first defensive snaps at some point during the last two games. With a flurry of moves at the trade deadline, the team announced its intention to contend in the near future. Protecting the health of key players in meaningless games could create audition opportunities for fringe reserves like Ballentine.
