The 2025-26 Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the best teams in NBA history. Unless they're playing the San Antonio Spurs.
Led by 29 points from De'Aaron Fox and 19 points and 11 rebounds from Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs defeated the Thunder, 117-102. It's the third win in as many meetings for the Spurs, who are 3-0 against OKC while the rest of the NBA is 2-26.
Wembanyama makes it difficult for the Thunder offensively when he's in the game, deterring shots in the paint and prompting the Thunder to shoot more from three-point range, where they were 11-for-44 Thursday. They generally shoot for a high percentage (36.7 percent on the season), but OKC prefers to do their damage inside the arc.
It has put them out of their comfort zone. In their three losses to the Spurs, all in the last two weeks, the Thunder have averaged 107 points, compared to their 122.8 PPG average against all other teams.
Wembanyama is still on a minutes restriction and coming off the bench, but he's making a big impression in those minutes. He's averaging 17.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and a block in 23.3 minutes, while the Spurs have been 47 points better than the Thunder while he's on the floor. Not only that, he seems to take his rivalry with Thunder center Chet Holmgren very personally.

Victor Wembanyama after Chet Holmgren misses a free throw

Early in Thursday's game, Wembanyama fouled Holmgren and shouted "Hell yeah!" when he missed a free throw. Though Wemby is only 21 and Holmgren just 23, the two players have a long rivalry that dates back to their time playing on teenage national teams, when Holmgren's Team USA edged Wembanyama's Team France 83-81 at the Under-19 World Cup in 2021.
Holmgren grabbed 12 rebounds Thursday, but scored only 10 points. Not only did Wembanyama intimidate many Thunder players from shooting inside, but OKC doesn't like to match Holmgren on Wemby, which led to Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson taking advantage of the matchup with the slower Holmgren to combine for 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting.
And when Holmgren did end up checking Wemby, the Spurs center showed off his passing.
