The Los Angeles Lakers' defensive woes showed again in prime time in a 119-96 loss to the Houston Rockets on Thursday.
Austin Reaves had to leave with another injury, and Luka Doncic looked far from healthy in the loss.
However, Lakers head coach JJ Redick believes it was all a matter of execution and effort — or a lack thereof. That's why, following the loss, the retired sharpshooter put his players on blast, claiming some didn't care.
"Saturday's practice — I told the guys — it's going to be uncomfortable," Redick said, per ESPN. "The meeting is going to be uncomfortable. I'm not doing another 53 games like this."
The second-year coach then hinted at some of the players who are to blame for this debacle. While he didn't mention them by name, the fans flooded social media with their own takes.
"It's a matter of making the choice," Redick said. "And too often, we have guys that don't want to make that choice. And it's pretty consistent who those guys are. ...
"We don't care enough right now. And that's the part that bothers you a lot. We don't care enough to do the things that are necessary. We don't care enough to be a professional."
Redick's team has struggled mightily on the defensive end of the floor this season, and this isn't the first time that he's taken not-so-subtle jabs at his own players. Accountability matters, and as a former player himself, Redick knows how far effort can take players and teams.
That being said, he has never admitted to being out-coached or that his lack of in-game adjustments and stubbornness to tweak his lineups or rotations have also held the team back multiple times, dating back to last season. Accountability goes both ways.
